One of the sons of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein attempted to contact US occupation officials in the capital of Baghdad through an intermediary to negotiate a safe surrender, according to Time magazine.

In its Monday edition, the paper said a relative had approached an intermediary asking the United States if Saddam's son Uday Hussein can "work out something" or "get some kind of immunity."

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal also reported that Uday was considering surrender. However, US-led forces in Iraq dismissed this report.

The American magazine cited a family servant and another source familiar with the communications as saying that Saddam Hussein and both his sons, Uday and Qusay, had survived the two US attempts on Saddam's life.

The Magazine, in addition, said that one reason the front lines against Baghdad fell so easily was because Qusay Hussein kept moving Republican Guard units from one place to another. As a result, many were out of position when the American troops arrived, the report explained.

The day before Baghdad fell, Qusay held a meeting with his senior generals, during which he kept repeating the same questions over and over again, according to the paper. "He looked nervous. He wasn't stable," the magazine quotes one of its sources as saying. (Albawaba.com)
