Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday arrived in Damascus on a two-day official visit to Syria. He was received at Damascus International Airport by Foreign Minister Farouk al Shara and other ministers. The Iranian president was accompanied by Foreign Minister, Mnouchehr Mottaki and Minister of Housing and City Construction, Mohammed Saeedi Kiya.
The visit is being held amid strong international pressure on the two countries. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran has described the Syrian-Iranian relations as strong, asserting that Syria and Iran have identical stances regarding the economic and cultural affairs and the regional issues. In a statement before his departure to Damascus, on Thursday, Ahmadinejad stressed that he will discuss with President Bashar al-Assad the bilateral relations between the two countries and the international and regional situation.
He added that during his visit to Syria he will sign a number of cooperation agreements in economic and cultural fields. “Tehran and Damascus stances are very clear regarding regional issues… they are against foreign intervention in the Middle East affairs,” IRNA news agency quoted President Ahmadinejad as saying ahead of his visit to Syria.
