Iran has detained a number of al-Qaeda members, the country's United Nations ambassador said Sunday refuting US accusations that Tehran has sheltered terrorist followers of Al Qaeda's Osama bin Laden.

UN Ambassador Javad Zarif said that Iran wanted to reduce tensions with Washington but would resist if the United States only speaks with "the language of pressure."

Speaking from the capital of Tehran to ABC News, the ambassador said, "We have had a number of al-Qaeda people in custody, and we continue to keep them in detention, and we continue to interrogate them, and once we have any information from them, we will pass them to friendly governments."
