Arrest warrants have been issued against members of the Laddh (Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights) and the FSS (Socialist Workers) after a brawl by local merchants at Ghardana against officials from the price regulation authority. About 50 people, several merchants as well as members of the two groups, were arrested at a demonstration last week, reports said Tuesday.
The demonstrators complained that the inspectors were unfairly interfering with their work and many have declared a strike. The government claimed that the inspectors were imposing fair pricing and that the rioters were causing instability. The Ladd has declared the public to galvanize in support of those arrested.
