Algerian education decision makers are arguing over which foreign language should be given priority, French or English. The debate came as the country adopts new policies within the educational reform program being debated in the country.
Arabic is now the official language in the Francophone country after former president Hawari Bumedianne replaced French with the national language. Most Algerians are Arabic-French bilingual.
According to El Khabar newspaper, the Committee in charge of presenting a report to the president on the best way to reform education in Algeria is quite unable to adopt one position.
“At most, the observers the committee would probably present two reports representing two current within the committee. The clash is about which foreign language should we give priority to - should it be French or English? The committee is divided about this specific issue,” said the paper Wednesday.
