Ibn Khaldoun Hall in Algeria hosted the famous soprano Farida Mohamed Alisoprano on Tuesday March 15. Liberte Algeria reports that Farida Mohamed Alisoprano performed in Algeria before in 2000 and now she is back to give an Iraqi maqam recital. Farida Mohamed Ali is originally from Iraq and she moved to Holland after the war in Iraq started.

She is the first female musician to be taught in the Baghdad Music Academy. “Iraqi maqam was born in Baghdad in the 8th century and at the beginning it was a religious hymn reserved only for men. For this reason normally we don’t say to sing a maqam but to read a maqam,” said Farida Mohamed Alisoprano during a press conference that was held on March 14.
