Syria possesses no weapons of mass destruction but it and other Middle East states have the right to take defensive measures against Israel's nuclear arsenal, Amr Moussa, the head of the Arab League stated Wednesday.
Speaking to the Dubai-based Al Arabiya television,
Moussa attacked the US, noting Washington was making a big mistake by accusing Damascus of WMD development without proof.
"Syria does not have weapons of mass destruction or nuclear weapons," the AL chief conveyed. "We can't presume Syria has nuclear weapons just like that, this is a mistake."
"There is just one state with WMDs in the Middle East - Israel. And in that case, perhaps in the near future, other states will try - and it is their right - to protect themselves against such weapons."
In a British newspaper interview Tuesday, Syrian President Bashar Assad said it was natural for Syria to find means to defend itself against Israeli aggression and that WMDs were readily available in the world. During his visit to Turkey, Assad said "We also reiterate our proposal to the UN Security Council on freeing the Middle East region of weapons of mass destruction which poses obsession for all the peoples of the region."
Moussa also told Al Arabiya that Israel was creating a "huge and serious security imbalance" by being the only state in the Middle East to hold such weapons. (Albawaba.com)
