Activists in Syria said Wednesday that airstrikes on the Daesh stronghold of Raqqa killed 25 civilians, six of them children, AFP reported.

"Dozens more were wounded, some of them critically," the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Observatory added that it was not yet known which group carried out the airstrikes.

The airstrikes targeting Daesh came just after the group dealt a heavy blow to Russian and government forces, pushing them back from Raqqa province after coming just 12 miles within the Euphrates River and Syria's largest dam.

Syrian government forces lost more than 40 troops and other militia fighters in the attack on Sunday and Monday, the Observatory said.
