One of Iraq's most famous universities was hit by U.S.-led air strikes on Sunday, blasting a huge crater at the entrance to the school and blowing windows out of nearby shops, witnesses said.

Reuters said the bomb hit Mustansiriya University -- one of the oldest schools in the Arab world and dating back to the 13th Century -- at about 3:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) as U.S. and British forces kept on with air assault on the Iraqi capital.

No classes were in session at the university, which has closed under the threat of U.S. and British air attack.

Three bystanders were injured in the blast. (Albawaba.com)
