The spread of AIDS in Tunisia is stable, according to Jean Michel Delmotte, the official representative of UNICEF in Tunisia and president of a local AIDS support group in the country. Tunisia has recorded 1,200 HIV positive cases.
This is considered a success for the efficiency of systems in place and monitoring activities of several AIDS awareness groups.
The first case of AIDS was discovered in Tunisia in December 1985 and since then 90% of AIDS cases have been men. The rest are split between women and children.
Delmotte pointed out that AIDS is continuing to rise in the world and that a measure such as those Tunisia has taken can lessen the spread of the epidemic.
