French superstar Gerard Depardieu underwent a successful coronary bypass surgery on Monday and is recovering in a Paris hospital, his film agency ArtMedia said Tuesday, according to the Associated Press news agency.
ArtMedia said that doctors decided to perform the operation following a series of medical tests, but that there was no emergency. It said Depardieu was expected to recover fully, added AP.
Depardieu is France's most prolific actor, with more than 100 movies to his credit, including Roxanne with Daryl Hannah, Cyrano de Bergerac with Vincent Perez, The Return of Martin Guerre with and the English-language comedy Green Card opposite Andie Macdowell.
According to AP, in May, the star attended the Cannes Film Festival in southern France to promote the lavish period drama Vatel and was filming a comedy when he fell ill. He is expected to return to the set soon, his film agency said—albawaba.com.
