Road accidents in the first five months of this year in Dubai have claimed the lives of 32 people who died in crashes due to speeding, according to police.
Lieutenant-Colonel Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Deputy Director of Dubai Traffic Police Department, told Khaleej Times the accidents, caused by speeding, were made worse by failure to buckle up.
The official said studies had shown that a collision at a speed of 60km/h equals a fall from the fifth floor of a building. A collision at the speed of 80km/h equals a fall from the eighth floor and at the speed of 100km/h equals a fall from the 13th floor.
Lt-Col Zafeen, a traffic engineer, said a collision at the speed of 120km/h, which is a common speed, equals a fall from the 19th floor of a building, according to the study.
He said the study had covered 611 vehicles driven on the road at speeds between 180 and 220km/h.
A total of 173 of the vehicles were driven at speeds between 140 and 170km/h, and 222 cars were driven in excess of 120km/h, and 202 cars at 120km/h or less – Albawaba.com
The official underlined that speed-monitoring devices had been found to be an effective tool to curb the practice. He said radars used on the Shaikh Zayed Road had reduced accidents by 60 per cent.
Lt-Col Zafeen said motorists should abide by speed limits on all roads to protect themselves and other road users.
