The Abu Dhabi Traffic Police and Licensing Department is to take strict measures to prevent road accidents this Eid in the light of previous experience. According to Captain Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Safety and Public Relations Director at the Department, more traffic police patrols will be on Abu Dhabi's main highways during the Eid holidays.

According to Gulf News, intensive efforts were being made this season to make Abu Dhabi roads safer. "The measures initiated by Brigadier Hassan Al Hosni, Department Director, last Eid Al Fitr have resulted in a tremendous decline in road accidents in the capital and its suburbs. "Therefore we have planned more special arrangements this time to make the roads safer for holidaymakers," Captain Al Amri explained. At Eid Al Adha last year 12 people were killed and 42 others were injured in road accidents during a week of holiday.

Captain Al Amri urged motorists to abide by speed limits on main highways and minimise the use of mobile phones, even with hand-free sets. He also said the largest number of road accidents happened on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai and Abu Dhabi Sila'a highways, where, he disclosed, extra patrols would be deployed this season to cut down road accidents.
