Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas declared he would meet Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon next month for the first time in three months, but Tel Aviv swiftly denied any date had been set.
"We are asking Israel to apply the accords of Sharm el-Sheikh and this demand will be at the centre of my meeting with Sharon on June 7," Abbas was quoted as saying following talks with Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak.
"The prime minister will be happy to meet Mr Abbas but neither the date or the place of the meeting have been fixed," was the response from Sharon's office, according to AFP.
Abbas himself had noted the exact date for the summit still had to be confirmed in coordination with Israeli officials, and did not specify where the meeting would take place.
On the ground, Palestinian activists have decided to halt mortar and rocket attacks on Israeli targets in and around the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian Authority official confirmed on Saturday.
According to RNA, PA Interior Ministry spokesman Tawfiq Abu Khoussa said Interior Minister Nasser Yousef had reached the agreement in talks held since Friday to help preserve the calm.
"Our brothers in Hamas reaffirmed their commitment to the quietness," Abu Khoussa was quoted as saying.
