Abbas gives national dialogue another chance

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday  decided to extend the dialogue between the Palestinian factions by three days in an attempt to reach an agreement on the prisoner's document calling for two states on the '67 borders.

Abbas decided on the extension after being approached on the matter by some Arab leaders.

PLO Executive Committee member Yasser Abed Rabo said Abbas’ move was aimed at giving the national dialogue another chance.

Hamas has welcomed the extension and has said it hoped that the dialogue will not take place under an ultimatum of a national referendum on the issue.

Earlier, Abbas told delegates from Palestinian factions that attempts aimed at getting the Hamas government to back the prisoners' document had failed and he would call a national referendum on the issue.

Fatah officials said Monday that Hamas had until midnight to accept the National Reconciliation Document, which calls for recognition of Israel and a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip according to the 1967 borders. Israel rejected the plan.
