520 outlets in the Emirati city of Dubai were fined last month for breaking health and hygiene rules, announced the Food Control Section of Dubai Municipality on Tuesday.
Khalid Mohammed Shareef, head of the section, told the Gulf News that food inspectors also issued 1,466 warning notices to others for minor offences.
The section undertook 1968 inspections in July. The checks covered restaurants, cafeterias, groceries, hotels, supermarkets and factories.
Shareef said the Food Trade Unit of the section, which monitors food imports to the emirate, rejected 2759 tons of food for non-compliance with the health and hygiene rules, along with the technical specifications.
The rejected items accounted for two per cent of more than 142,000 tons of food imports to the emirate in July.
The Food Safety Unit destroyed 92 tons of vegetable and fruits from the local markets as they were not fit for consumption, he added.
The unit also imposed 44 fines and issued 189 warning notices to the outlets.
The Hazards Control and Analysis Sub-Unit inspected 13 food and drinks factories, of which three were fined and 10 warned. They checked 36 graded hotels too, 12 of them were fined and 24 warned – Albawaba.com
