ALBAWABA - 35 bodies, including those of women and children, were excavated from a mass grave in the rural Daraa region of southern Syria, according to a report released on Monday by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Previously, military intelligence units loyal to the previous government controlled the location.

Many of the dead, according to the Observatory, seemed to have been buried for more than ten years, most likely in the early years of the Syrian conflict. The site is still being searched, and it is anticipated that more remains will be found in the days ahead.

During Syria's civil war, a group affiliated with the Military Intelligence Branch utilized the Kuwaiti Farm region, where the mass grave was situated, as a base.

The province has continued to be a hotspot for security incidents, seeing periodic violence and instability, even after a reconciliation agreement was reached in 2019 under Russian mediation and Daraa's government power was restored.

This grave's discovery underscores the conflict's gruesome legacy and the ongoing difficulties in confronting historical atrocities. Since more remains are predicted to be discovered, extra investigations are planned.
