ALBAWABA- U.S. authorities responded to two serious security incidents on Thursday, including a deadly shooting at Old Dominion University in Norfolk and a vehicle-ramming attack at Temple Israel near Detroit.
At Old Dominion University, an active shooter opened fire shortly before 11:00 a.m. inside Constant Hall, which houses the university’s College of Business. The university issued an emergency alert instructing students and staff to follow “Run–Hide–Fight” safety protocols as police and campus security responded.
Authorities later confirmed that the gunman was killed during the incident. Three victims were critically injured and transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Some reports identified the victims as members of the university’s ROTC program, though officials have not yet formally confirmed their affiliations.
Police issued an “all clear” shortly after 12:05 p.m., saying there was no ongoing threat to the campus community. Classes and operations were suspended for the rest of the day while investigators continued to process the scene. Officials have not released the suspect’s identity or possible motive.
In a separate incident hours later in Michigan, police and federal agents responded after a truck deliberately crashed into Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the Detroit metropolitan area. The vehicle struck the building, which houses an early childhood education center, and caught fire inside the preschool area, sending thick smoke from the structure.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots immediately after the crash. Authorities from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, local police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene.
All children, staff, and congregants were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. However, the suspect fled and remains at large. Regional Jewish institutions were advised to activate security lockout protocols as the investigation continues.
