ALBAWABA - By a majority vote of 28 in favor and 6 against, including the US and Germany, the UN Human Rights Council has taken a crucial step toward holding Israel responsible for possible war crimes. A recommendation to halt arms sales to Israel is also included in the council's decision.
Israel has denounced the ruling, characterizing it as discriminatory and undermining the credibility of the human rights council procedure. The United States provided no explanation for its dissenting vote, pointing to the lack of censure of Hamas. Applause broke out when the verdict was approved, in spite of the protests.
The adopted resolution places a strong emphasis on the necessity of stopping arms transfers to Israel in order to stop possible war crimes and human rights abuses.
The council also emphasized the significance of Israel returning to its 1967 boundaries and demanded a halt to Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights, which are associated with illegal settlement policies.
With its resolution, the UN Human Rights Council has taken a major stand and expressed concern about the state of affairs in Israel and the occupied territories on a global scale.
