Flash floods triggered by a heavy hailstorm have killed at least 22 and injured over 100 in the northwestern city of Meshkinshahr in Iran, a local source said Saturday.
City official Abdollah Kamkar told the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, that rescue efforts were underway.
"First aid, including foodstuffs, medicine and blankets have been sent to the flood-stricken residents," he said.
The official added that five villages had been hit by the heavy floods.
Earlier, another provincial official said that the death toll could rise.
The flooding occurred in the foothills of Sabalan Mountain, which usually draws many visitors, particularly on Fridays, which are public holidays in Iran.
Flooding has been a rare occurrence in Iran since 1998, when the country was hit by the worst drought in 30 years – Albawaba.com
