Five American troops killed by roadside bombs in two separate incidents in Baghdad, the U.S. military said Sunday. In the first attack Saturday around 1:40 p.m., a patrol hit a roadside bomb in the southern Dora neighborhood, killing one soldier, a statement said. Two others were injured in that incident.
Later that evening, around 11 p.m., four soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb went off in southwestern Baghdad.
A car bomb went off at an Iraqi police checkpoint south of Baghdad on Sunday, killing five people and injuring 10, including two policeman, police said. The attack took place about 50 km south of Baghdad near the town of Haswa, the police department in nearby Hilla said, according to Reuters.
Later in the day, a bodygard of Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Chalabi died in an attack on a convoy south of Baghdad, an interior ministry source told AFP. Chalabi himself however was not aboard the vehicle. Three people were wounded in the attack, reports said.
Two unidentified bodies, with gunshot wounds, were located in Baghdad, and a local interpreter working for US forces was shot dead in the northern city of Kirkuk. In addition, 11 gunmen were killed during a clash with US marines close to the northwestern town of Haditha, the US army said.
Meanwhile, occupation forces said on Saturday that nine "terror" suspects were arrested during different operations in various parts of of the northern city of Mosul. The statement released indicated that the search operations ended up in arrest of five in Telafar, two in southeast Mosul in addition to confiscatuon of a cache of arms, one in east Mosul and one in Rawa.
The Iraqi police in Mosul said in a statement released Saturday that one infant was freed and her kidnappers were arrested.
