Fred Douglas, Chairman of the Dubai Rowing and Sculling Club – and fellow Committee Member Ian Atkinson will be competing in the World Offshore Rowing Championships in Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK.
Taking place over 2 - 3 September the challenge will be joined by the inaugural British coastal championships and is expected to be the largest such event ever for the Channel Islands with more than 500 rowers and officials expected from around the world.
The local organizer in Guernsey, Tim Prout says that he has many teams competing from England, Wales and Ireland with entries also expected from France and Italy and the Dubai team will add to their ever increasing international participation.
Competitors will race along the shoreline with men covering a 12km distance and women racing over an 8 km course.
Fred Douglas and Ian Atkinson been training for 3 months – 5 times a week in a double scull owned by the Dubai rowing and Sculling Club and sponsored by Pal zileri Menswear.
Training for this race has involved intensive sessions of rowing in Dubai Marina through out the Dubai summer heat, as well as extensive gym sessions.
Olympic Rowing started in Dubai in 2005 ,The Club is housed at Dubai International Marine Club – adjacent to Le Meridien Mina Seyahi at Interchange 5. The Club currently has 38 members and has had a very successful first year of operation obtaining several sponsors for the club boats and an ever increasing number of new and experienced rowers.
