Seventeen Hong Kong people are missing in New York following terrorist attacks that devastated the city's financial heart last week, a government spokeswoman said Sunday.

Of the eight men and nine women, aged between 25 and 80, four had been working in New York and 12 were living there, she told AFP. One had been a visitor.

The immigration department had received 26 calls from Hong Kong residents requesting it contact relatives in the US after the attacks. Nine people had so far been located, she said.

Thousands of people were feared to have been killed after two hijacked airliners smashed into the World Trade Center in New York last Tuesday. Another hijacked plane struck the Pentagon in Washington and a fourth crashed near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- HONG KONG (AFP)
