Twelve new dams will be built in UAE’s east coast region at a cost of Dh60 million ($16m), reported the Gulf News on Saturday.

Construction work will start as soon on three dams at Safad, Al Thaib and Murbeh which are due to be completed late this year, said the paper.

“These dams are expected to cost Dh23 million. They are part of a network of ten new dams costing Dh62 million,” an official said.

There will be two dams in Wadi Ham, one in the Al Hail area, and four in Wadi Romez.

Hassan Al Yemahi, head of the Survey and Lands Department at Dibba Al Fujairah Municipality, said that two more dams are being built at Al Rakibi and Dalum in Dibba.

"Apart from the other important dams being constructed on the East Coast, the dams of Al Rakibi and Dalum are very significant for the nationals living there, who usually suffer from a lack of water in wells during summer," Al Yemahi said. The Al Rakibi dam will store enough water for more than 88 farms and 160 homes.

Wadi Dalum dam will meet the needs of more than 500 homes, 100 shops, and 300 industrial workshops.

"All the dams will help enhance the underground water storage, and the wells at farms as well. The dams will give farmers a continuous source of water for irrigation to ensure a good harvest," he said – Albawaba.com
