A massive blast at a gas terminal near Egypt's border with Israel has leapt huge flames into the air and forced the shutdown of the pipeline. The explosion targeted the al-Sabil terminal to the west of the town of El-Arish on Wednesday morning, the Associated Press reported.
Valves controlling the flow of gas to neighboring Jordan had been shut down as a result of the blast, according to Egyptian officials.
The attack was the second in kind on the pipeline. On March 27, unknown armed men had placed explosive devices at the terminal to blow it up, but had failed to carry out their act.
The blast today comes amid investigations about corruption related to the exports of gas to Israel during former president Hosni Mubarak' sera. He was investigated on the issue over the weekend. Additionally, former senior oil officials, including former minister of oil Sameh Fahmi were arrested by the authorities.
