According to an article in The Independent by Lizzie Dearden, the Swedish city of Lund is going to offer housing, employment, education and other benefits to former Daesh (ISIS) fighters in an effort to rehabilitate them.
Citing an interview city anti-extremism coordinator Anna Sjorstand gave to Sveriges Radio, the article points out that the decision is consistent with the city’s efforts to reintegrate former Neo-Nazis and criminals into society. By that standard, it sounds OK, no?
The article did not generate much buzz on Twitter, but among those who commented on it, outrage was the common theme.
Dear #ISIS, no problem you slaughtered Arabs in Syria &Iraq, but here you get nice goodies so u dont kill civilized people. Regards, Sweden. https://t.co/NU0bVVMol7
Sweden is at the forefront of the debate over Islam’s role in the West. In 2013, some Swedish women donned hijabs to protest a hate crime against a young Muslim woman. This year, openly gay Donald Trump supporter Milo Yiannopoulos stated his intention to have a pride march in a largely Muslim Stockholm neighborhood. This was preceded by a similar protest in 2015.
