Syria's city of Aleppo has been through a lot of damage during the fighting. And on Sunday the Citadel of Aleppo became another casualty of war, causing a media frenzy that pointed fingers at opposing sides.

Part of the citadel's wall was destroyed by an explosion in a tunnel under the city, Reuters reported. State news said opposition fighters dug the tunnel.

Conflicting reports make it unclear who was responsible for the explosion. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights — sometimes criticized for being too pro-rebel — said the Syrian government had blasted the tunnel. State news said it was rebels.

The entire ancient city of Aleppo became listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in danger in 2013. It was the most populous city until the revolution split the city into sections, partly controlled by the government and partly by opposition groups
