The pending cricifixion and beheading of Saudi teen Ali Mohammed al-Nimr has spurred international outcry in recent weeks, now it's caught the attention of international hactivist group Anonymous.
Al-Nimr was arrested in 2012 for protesting during an Arab Spring wave in Saudi Arabia when activists say he was only 16 or 17 years old. Now he's been handed the barbaric sentence by 13 of the country's judges, meaning the only person left to approve it is Saudi King Salman. This week, that's the final move the hacker group hopes to halt.
The group announced Sunday the shut down of several Saudi government websites and promised to do more until the sentencing is reversed.
“An innocent young teenage boy has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia and we will not stand by and watch," the group said in an official statement to King Salman.
Anonymous is only the most recent group to speak out against al-Nimr's fate. But a voice that's markedly missing from this debate is the US. So far, no official has released a statement. Guess we'll see what comes next?
