In an essay she wrote in Newsweek magazine to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Anne Frank’s stepsister accused Donald Trump of “acting like another Hitler.” Eva Schloss survived Auschwitz alongside her mother, however her father and brother died at the notorious concentration camp.

“If Donald Trump becomes the next president of the US it would be a complete disaster. I think he is acting like another Hitler by inciting racism.” she wrote.

Schloss and Frank were both Jewish refugees in Amsterdam, and played together as children. Anne’s father, Otto Frank, married Eva’s mother after the war. Schloss has written several books about her experiences during the Holocaust, and is the co-founder of the Anne Frank Trust UK.

Referencing the current refugee crisis, she added:

“I remember how upset the world was when the Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 and now everybody is building walls again to keep people out. It's absurd.”

She described her frustration and upset over the current situation regarding Syrian refugees, noting that Otto Frank had tried to seek asylum in the US.

"He tried everything to save his family from the Holocaust. He knew someone who worked in Roosevelt's administration and begged him to do anything possible but in the end his request was rejected. America didn't want to take any more refugees in the 1940s” she wrote.

She even likened the Syrian people’s struggles to those Jews went through during the Holocaust.

“We haven't really learnt anything. I'm depressed by the current situation. The experience of the Syrian refugees is similar to what we went through.”
