Netflix cancelations rise after CEO endorses Harris in $7 million donation

ALBAWABA - Streaming service Netflix recently made headlines after its CEO Reed Hastings endorsed Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential elections resulting in subscription cancelations across the US, as reported by Bloomberg.

Hastings donated around $7 million to the vice president's Harris-Waltz campaign resulting in cancellations nearly tripling across the US, according to the researcher Antenna resulting in the streaming company having the least amount of customer turnover compared to its competitors. 

Before its CEO endorsed Harris, Netflix also witnessed a spike in cancellations due to hiring the price for its subscription plans in July 2024.

Hastings also took to his official X account (Formerly known as Twitter) and personally endorsed Kamala Harris in a post a day before donating the $7 million. Amid the news, #CancelNetflix became trending across social media platforms with users screenshotting their cancelations and posting them.

Many users also took to comment sections to express their opinions about the matter in question. Here's what they had to say: 

"Netflix is garbage man. Absolute trash for the mind."

"I have been a member since 2007 and I stopped giving money to people who go against my values. I canceled back in July."

"I'll be canceling Netflix Today!" 

"Not a fan of cancel culture, but I canceled Netflix years ago because it kept on producing garbage and it's spreading industry-wide. people should go back to producing well thought out great script original films."

By the time of writing this article, no comment was made from the company while Hastings still didn't respond to Bloomberg for further comments about the matter.

Users are also canceling their Netflix subscriptions for several other reasons including, subpar shows, canceling beloved series, and fumbling the bag with some like the last season of Umbrella Academy.

Moreover, many also claimed that their shows have allegedly become "Too woke" claiming that its series are always trying to push an agenda by including elements about the LGBTQ community, diversity, and more.
