ALBAWABA - Katy Perry launched the Joy Awards with fireworks and controversy.
American superstar Katy Perry opened the 2026 Joy Awards in Riyadh with a dramatic performance that immediately became one of the most discussed moments of the night. The show kicked off with a fireworks display above the venue, signaling the start of one of the major entertainment events of the Arab world as part of Riyadh Season.
Before taking the stage, Perry walked the lavender carpet in an elegant gown designed by Saudi designer Waad Aloqaili. The strapless dress featured a pearly white fitted bodice and a flowing ivory skirt with light pink details, offering a modest yet glamorous look that drew praise from fashion critics and viewers online. Many noted the choice of a Saudi label as a respectful nod to the host country.
On stage, Perry changed into a shimmering gold suit composed of a loose jacket and wide-leg trousers. The modest monochromatic outfit aligned with the formal and conservative atmosphere of the ceremony. She delivered a tightly choreographed performance with a group of dancers, earning applause from the high-profile audience, which included Arab and international stars such as Robbie Williams, Forest Whitaker, Alexander Ludwig, Paul Anderson, and Shah Rukh Khan.

Later during the ceremony, Perry presented the Best Female Artist award to Egyptian singer Angham, who won the category following strong public voting.
However, the performance sparked different reactions online. Many viewers praised the show, calling it “world-class,” “tasteful,” and an impressive opening for a regional award ceremony. Others highlighted Perry’s respect for local cultural norms, especially in fashion choices and stage presentation.
On the other hand, a segment of viewers interpreted the choreography and visual staging differently. Some social media users argued that the performance included symbolic gestures, geometric formations, and red costumes worn by backup dancers that they associated with Masonic-style imagery. Certain users focused on triangular hand movements and lighting sequences as evidence, while others dismissed these claims as exaggerated or speculative.
The Joy Awards did not comment on the debate, and Perry has not addressed the online discussion. Despite the contrasting reactions, her performance succeeded in generating global attention for the ceremony.
The 2026 Joy Awards also unveiled a new trophy design. Created by Caroline Chopard, the award features a falcon in motion made of 18-karat gold with black onyx eyes. The updated design added to the event’s growing reputation as a major cultural and entertainment gathering in the Middle East.
