ALBAWABA In a devastating incident on Tuesday, a truck plowed into a group of students near a school in Basra province, Kurdistan Region, leaving at least six dead and 14 others injured.
The driver of the truck has been detained, confirmed a spokesperson for the interior ministry.
"Basra province's police apprehended the driver of a refrigerator truck involved in the tragic accident that claimed the lives of six school students.
Additionally, 14 others sustained injuries of varying degrees," stated Miqdad Miri, spokesperson for the interior ministry. The incident occurred in the northern city of al-Hartha in Basra province.
The driver confessed during initial questioning that the accident happened due to brake failure, leading to him losing control of the vehicle.
The devastating event unfolded in front of Zainab Primary School, where the students were enrolled. Initial assessments by the Iraqi Health Ministry indicated that six students succumbed to their injuries, with another 14 sustaining varying degrees of harm.
