The Court of Cassation has upheld a January State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing a man to 10 years in prison after convicting him of carrying out attacks that endangered society in Ramtha in 2018.
The defendant was also convicted by the SSC of possessing chemical substances with illicit intent and with manufacturing homemade explosives.
The defendant was arrested in December 2018 after detonating homemade explosives in Ramtha that did not injure anyone, according to court documents.
Court documents said one of the defendant's relatives was murdered and he decided to take revenge by attacking the property of the person who was responsible for the killing.
"The defendant manufactured a homemade bomb using chemicals that are available in the market and taught this technique to a man who was tried with him in the case, but found not guilty," the court documents said.
"The defendant took the homemade bomb and detonated it to make sure it will work so that he could attack the properties of the family suspected of murdering his relative,” court papers said.
The bomb exploded causing a loud sound and a fire that was extinguished by the Civil Defence Department, the court documents maintained.
The defendant was arrested by security forces shortly after the explosion, the court added.
The defendant contested the SSC ruling arguing that the SSC relied on "unreliable witness testimonies, as well as, overlooking some crucial evidence".
The SSC general prosecutor asked the higher court to uphold the sentence, stating that the SSC had followed the proper procedures when sentencing the defendant.
The higher court ruled that the SSC had followed the proper procedures and that the defendant deserved the verdict he had received.
"It was clear to the court that the defendant confessed willingly to plotting the attacks using homemade explosives and, therefore, he deserves the sentence he had received," the SSC ruled.
The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Naji Zu’bi, Yassin Abdullat, Hammad Ghzawi and Rizeq Abul Fool.
