The young driver, ordered to pay a fine of Dh10,000 ($2,722), was exonerated from illegally consuming liquor and driving under the influence of alcohol.
As per court records, the public prosecution had accused the defendant of failure to observe traffic lanes, inattentive driving, abusing liquor, driving under the influence of alcohol, manslaughter, and damaging a portable property of others.
The young driver was also charged with failure to stop at the accident site, but he denied the same, leave alone abusing liquor and driving under the influence of alcohol, but admitted to other charges.
The accused said he heard a sound of collision while driving on the Al Hamra road, but saw nothing in the mirror when he pulled over some 70m afterwards. He thought he ran over a stray animal because it sounded low.
He added that he was driving inattentively because of being over exhausted, and saw nothing because of the heavy fog.
The young driver later told a friend of his that he ran over something on the Al Hamra road, but he could not identify what he collided with.
He asked him to call the police station to get more details about the accident, following which he came to know that he ran over a young man who succumbed to the fatal injuries he received on the spot.
The policeman asked the defendant to hand himself over to the police station for due action. The accused was referred to the prosecution which accused him of the said charges. He then stood trial at the RAK Traffic Misdemeanour Court that found him guilty and gave the earlier verdicts against him.
