A 107-year-old woman who was forced from her home in Syria due to the civil war was reunited in Germany with her family, including her newborn great-great-granddaughter, officials reported Monday.
Sabria Khalaf, who is a member of Syria's Kurdish minority, applied for asylum in Greece after being forced to leave Syria seven months ago with her son Kenan, the Associated Press reported.
In what might be the most heartwarming reunion of all time, Sabria was met by about 20 members of her family, including her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her 33-day-old great-great-granddaughter, the dpa news agency said.
A spokesman for the Office for Migrants and Refugees, Christoph Sander, told AP that a decision was made to expedite Khalaf's transfer to Germany on humanitarian grounds.
The move was prompted by an article about Khalaf in Munich daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung earlier this month, according to AP. The story caught the attention of a lawmaker who in turn called on German President Joachim Gauck to intervene on her behalf and expedite the process of bringing her back together with her family in Germany, dpa reported.
