Think Muslim women who wear the burka are oppressed? Think again! Gisele Marie has been the frontwoman of her brother’s band Spectrus since 2012 but also dons the Islamic face veil proudly while on stage.
The 42-year-old who is based in Sao Paulo converted to Islam after her father passed away back in 2009.
“People do not expect to see a Muslim woman who uses a burka practise the religion properly and is a professional guitarist who plays in a heavy metal band,” the headbanger told the NowThis channel.
Marie has had mixed reactions from people. At one point, her was burka ripped off on the street but many people have also been supportive.
“This is my work, this is my profession and at the same time I am Muslim, I don’t think on has anything to do with the other,” she added.
