A 32-year-old unemployed man has gone on trial in a Dubai court on the charge of evading two police officers and physically assaulting one of them.
The Court of First Instance was told that the Emirati man was ordered to stop by two police officers as he walked injured on a road in Al Quoz on January 11, but he ran away and punched one of the officers on the head. He also allegedly pulled that officer forcibly by his uniform tearing it up and making it unusable.
He has been charged with assaulting a police officer and damaging a public property.
"I was on police patrol duty with a colleague when we were informed about a man walking injured on a road in Al Quoz. We called for an ambulance and went there," a police sergeant said.
"We spotted the accused standing on a sidewalk. He did not look fine and his hands were injured. I stepped off the car and tried to calm him down. The paramedics covered his cuts on his arm with bandages. He was shaking and moving his head uncontrollably saying he would die.
"When a paramedic offered the defendant water upon his request, he ran away. As I ran after him he turned around to me and punched me."
The sergeant told the prosecutor the accused also grabbed him by his shoulder, pulling him by his uniform and tearing it up. "He scratched my neck. But we managed to catch and handcuff him and we took him into custody."
The court will pronounce a ruling on April 17.
