Presidential hopeful Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail filed a case, Wednesday, at the State Council against the head of the Supreme Electoral Commission Abdel-Moez Ibrahim and Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, demanding certificate confirming his mother does not have dual nationality.
The case comes amid claims that the mother of the Salafist former lawyer holds a US passport, which according to Egyptian electoral law would make him ineligible to run in the presidential elections.
Abu-Ismail, who vehemently denies the accusations, says government bodies are using different media channels to propagate this rumour in order to taint his image as a presidential candidate and to scupper his election campaign.
With the world shrinking, do you think governments should have such restrictions on the nationalities of election candidates? Is this law fair to Egyptians who have different nationalities, but have never lived in those countries?
