A housemaid is to face trial for attempting to abort her baby with herbal medicine, running away from her sponsor and working in prostitution. She turned herself into the authorities when she was six months pregnant, hoping to be deported.
The 35-year-old housemaid, T.R., was said to have fallen in love with a man named Ali and got pregnant after they had sex outside of marriage.
Records said T.R. took herbal medicine and when the abortion failed she had to work in prostitution because she was in need of cash.
Prosecutors have accused the Indonesian defendant of attempting to abort her baby, having consensual sex with Ali and being a prostitute.
Jail wardens failed to bring T.R. from detention and produce her before the Dubai Court of First Instance where she was scheduled to be prosecuted on Wednesday.
Presiding Judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi adjourned the case until Sunday so T.R. could be brought from detention.
Prosecutors charged Ali with aiding and abetting T.R. by giving her herbal medicine to abort the six-month-old foetus. Ali was also accused of having consensual sex with T.R.
The housemaid admitted that she met Ali in early 2012 and fell in love with him.
“Our relationship developed into love. We had consensual sex several times during one year and three months. The last time we had sex was in his minivan in front of my Emirati sponsor’s house. When I informed Ali about my suspicions that I was pregnant, he bought me the pregnancy test kit … I turned out to be pregnant. We agreed that I get rid of the baby… so Ali gave me the herbal medicine. When the abortion failed, I ran away from my sponsor’s residence to avoid humiliation.
“I met a Pakistani person named Haidar and had sex with him for money, which I desperately needed back then. Haidar started getting me men to have sex with me for money. When I turned six months pregnant, I turned myself in to the police because I wanted to be deported,” T.R. said during prosecution questioning.
Records said the woman surrendered herself last month.
