The doctor who allegedly misdiagnosed nine-month-old Ella Tannous, leading to a medical condition that required all four of her limbs to be amputated, said Tuesday that his conscience was clean.
Dr. Issam Maalouf expressed his faith in the judicial system after a hearing of the medical committee tasked with investigating the case was adjourned, due to the absence of the Tannous family attorney for personal reasons.
"Ella is in my heart," he said.
Speaking to reporters outside the Justice Palace, Maalouf's lawyer, Sakhr al-Hashem said, "Justice will take its course."
He told the press that several doctors were summoned to testify before the committee, which was comprised of seven doctors.
“We are compelled to continue till the end,” Hashem said, adding that his defendant had no intention of backing down.
Maalouf was arrested in June after being accused of negligence in the case of the infant.
He was granted a bail of LL100 million ($66,335).
The doctor insists he did not misdiagnose the baby, a claim the Tannous family rejects.
