Doctors in Jhansi who amputated a man's leg to save his life used the same limb as a pillow on Saturday, say reports.

When a bus turned turtle in the Uttar Pradesh city, a cleaner who was in the vehicle was left with a serious limb injury.

When he was rushed to Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, doctors reportedly amputated the leg to save him from infection, and then decided to use it as a pillow to cradle his ahead.

There are conflicting reports of when the man lost his limb, however. Some media reports allege it was at the hands of the doctors; others say it was during the bus crash.

What the authorities have agreed on since a TV channel streamed a video of the incident is that a probe is in order. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma has assured strict action against those found guilty.

''He was given immediate medical aid. The doctor looked for something to raise his head. Patient's attendant used the leg for the same. We've set up a committee. Strict action will be taken if our staff is found to be at fault,'' Sadhna Kaushik, Principal, Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, said.

In the meantime, the attending two doctors and nurses have been suspended.
