The World Tourism Organization predicts the value of Egyptian annual tourism revenues to grow to $9.5 billion by 2005. The organization also anticipates 9.5 million tourists to visit Egypt in 2005 reported Al-Sharq Al-Aswat on Octoner 14. These tourists are expected to spend 66.5 million nights in Egypt in that year. The tourism sector’s 5-year development plan aims to increase hotel vacancy to 186,000 rooms by 2005.
Egypt controlled 24.9 percent of the tourism market in the Middle East in 2000 compared with its monopoly of 24.6 percent in the previous year. The report also revealed that Egypt’s tourism revenues totaled $4.3 billion in 2000, an 11.3% increase compared with 1999. Average spending per tourist in Egypt amounted to $849 in 2000 compared with $681 in other parts of the world. (Mena Report)
