The United States Trade and Development Agency has allocated over $1 million to two new grants for Egypt. The grants will finance a study for a proposed methanol/ammonia plant and evaluate requirements for the construction of hazardous waste facilities in Egypt.

The Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (Echem) was awarded a $701,801 grant to support a feasibility study on a proposed methanol/ammonia plant, which would help bolster Egypt's petrochemical outputs for export and domestic use.

Henry Steingass, the USTDA Regional Director for Africa and the Middle East said, "USTDA is very pleased to begin this third partnership with Echem to promote growth and investment in Egypt's strategically vital petrochemicals industry."

A $391,200 grant was awarded to the Egyptian Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs to support the ministry's efforts to evaluate the measures needed to construct six hazardous waste treatment and disposal facilities.

"We hope that the access to U.S. experts and technical solutions that this grant will provide will assist the EEAA [Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency] in its commitment to manage hazardous waste responsibly and promote continued industrial growth and investment in Egypt," said Steingrass.
