ALBAWABA - In a recent turn of events, gaming giant Ubisoft successfully identified and neutralized a cyber attack orchestrated by an unknown hacker on December 20, as reported by Vxunderground on Twitter.
The infiltrator managed to gain unauthorized access to Ubisoft's servers, maintaining control for a concerning 48-hour period before the breach was discovered and access promptly terminated by Ubisoft security experts.
Sources close to the incident revealed that the hacker aimed to leak a substantial 900 GB of data during the breach, but fortunately, Ubisoft's defensive measures proved effective, thwarting the attempt. The precise method employed by the infiltrator to breach the servers remains undisclosed, prompting Ubisoft to launch an internal investigation to bolster its security measures.
While Ubisoft successfully repelled the cyber intrusion, another prominent player in the gaming industry, Insomniac Games, faced a less fortunate fate. The Rhysida hacker group targeted Insomniac, successfully compromising a staggering 2 TB of sensitive data, including details on the highly anticipated Wolverine game and other upcoming projects. This pilfered information was later disclosed by the assailants.
The gaming industry has increasingly become a hotspot for cybercriminals in recent years. In a similar incident in 2020, Capcom experienced a significant data breach, exposing confidential projects such as Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Street Fighter 6. International law enforcement agencies collaborated in an extensive investigation, ultimately leading to the apprehension of the hacker group responsible for the Capcom breach.
In a separate incident last year, videos related to the development of GTA 6 were illicitly obtained and subsequently leaked online. The Lapsus$ group, led by Arion Kurtaj, faced legal consequences following a seven-week trial, shedding light on the persistent cybersecurity threats facing the gaming industry.
