The Moroccan authorities have recently reported that 27 million tons of cargo were shipped via the local seaports during June, 2000. This figure, appearing in an August 20th article in Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily, represents a 2.4 percent increase compared with June, 1999.
In addition, the volume of exports grew from 14.22 million tons to 15.25 million tons during the same period, while the exports volume declined from 13.12 million tons to 11.75 million tons during the period in question.
The total number of ports in Morocco is 26, 11 of which are main trade and fishing ports, nine are regional fishing ports and six are boating ports. The 3500 km coast of the country gives Morocco the natural inclination to maritime activities, with 98 percent of international commercial trade executed through the sea.
