The Japanese computer manufacturer Toshiba recently announced that it will be launching the 6000 portable notebook model from its Satellite Pro series in the Middle East towards the end of January 2002. The new model will go on sale simultaneously in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon and Oman at prices starting from $2,300.

Portable notebook computers are threatening to eclipse bulky desktop systems as wireless technology improves and retail prices fall, says Ahmed Khalil, Middle East sales manager of Toshiba’s Dubai-based computer systems division.

Khalil added that notebooks are no longer a big-ticket item carrying a premium price for lightness and mobility. And by dispensing with the costly cable and cord systems needed to harness a network of desktop computers in an office, notebooks can often be a more cost-effective option for small to medium-sized businesses.

The new Satellite Pro 6000 has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi directly embedded, enabling wireless file sharing, instant messaging, and data transfer between other Bluetooth-equipped devices. With its built-in modem, Ethernet port, and integrated Toshiba DVD/CD-RW drive, the 6000 lets users view DVD movies, create audio/video CDs, and back up data. It is also the first notebook to have a secure digital (SD) media slot that accepts an SD memory card, which can store up to four hours of music or 40 minutes of video. — (menareport.com)
