Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) have successfully completed a two-year project to revalidate all consultants working in the respective organizations. Nearly 800 consultants from HMC and PHCC have had their credentials revalidated against the international benchmark criteria used by Medical Validation Ireland (MVIRL), a consortium of renowned international certifying authorities in Ireland.

HMC’s Managing Director, Hanan Al Kuwari, PhD, explained that the primary function of revalidation was to safeguard the best possible standards of care for patients. “Achieving validation with MVI is a testament to the high level of professionalism, advanced qualifications and specialization of our doctors.  We are confident that the revalidation process helps us to uphold our high standards and the quality of care we provide. I'm very proud of our team for successfully achieving revalidation and for remaining steadfast in our commitment to care for each and every patient with compassion, safely and effectively," said Dr. Al Kuwari.

HMC and PHCC engaged the Irish consortium, which was managed by MVIRL (a subsidiary of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)), in 2013 to complete a peer review of the credentials of every consultant.

The successful conclusion of the revalidation project and the invaluable engagement and support of consultants and the program coordinators was marked in a recent celebration event organized by HMC and PHCC in collaboration with MVIRL.

Dr. Mariam Abdulmalik, Managing Director of PHCC, stated that the event was an ideal forum to formally mark the conclusion of this major project and to recognize all the teams who have worked diligently to accomplish such a considerable task.

Dr. Abdulmalik also highlighted the importance of this project by stating: “The international level of a healthcare system is marked by providing excellent prevention and treatment services and this cannot be achieved by establishing buildings, facilities and importing new medical equipment only; it requires qualified, specialized and accountable human resources. Within this context, this program contributes to the development of professional standards through encouraging consultants to adopt the approach of self-accountability and medical performance progress. In addition, the documentation of consultants’ qualifications will be reflected positively in the delivery of healthcare quality improvement and patient safety.

“The successful conclusion of this significant collaborative effort by three groups demonstrates the commitment shown by PHCC, HMC and MVI to work together to help give our patients the confidence that they are getting the best care possible,” Dr. Abdulmalik added.

More than 30 MVIRL representatives joined the celebration to mark the successful conclusion of the revalidation program. These included presidents and deans of all the participating colleges who worked closely with HMC and PHCC.

"We are delighted to have worked closely with HMC and PHCC on this major initiative. This was the first time that the postgraduate training bodies have cooperatively responded to an international request of this kind. This significant project offers an example of cooperation across the training bodies that will, I hope, provide a template for further overseas initiatives," said Professor Cathal Kelly, Director of MVIRL and Chief Executive of RCSI. “I am also delighted that senior representatives from all the Irish training bodies were present at the celebration event in Doha, which was a mark of their respect and admiration for the revalidation program leads and the consultants in Qatar.”
