Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) has been recognised for its commitment to Health and Safety on the 14th of May with a Gold Award from the Royal Society of Accident Prevention (ROsPA) - the UK’s leading safety organization, under the patronage of Her Majesty The Queen of England. The Award received almost 2,000 entries in 2012, and EMAL came out on top taking home one of the most sought after accolades in the industry.

The Gold Award establishes EMAL as a leader in Health and Safety on the global industrial stage, sharing workplace expertise in Health and Safety with an international safety community. Also recognised regionally as a Health and Safety leader, EMAL won the Gulf Safety Council Award in 2012 for its efforts in developing EHS Leaders on the shop floor by establishing EHS representatives within the operator employees.

Commenting on the accolade, Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, President and CEO of EMAL said: “This prestigious international award is welcome recognition of the importance we place on a safe and healthy work environment. Safety has been at the heart of our project since the beginning and we continually set new industry Health and Safety benchmarks. Our relationship with RoSPA will help us to continue this impressive record of success and continue our journey to achieve a Zero Harm workplace.”

In addition, EMAL also surpassed another Health and Safety milestone by achieving 15 million operational work hours with zero LTI in early May.

EMAL also further heightened its commitment to workplace safety for employees with an expanded (Environment, Health and Safety) ‘EHS Representatives Program: Developing EHS leaders on the shop floor’ for 2013 by integrating NEBOSH Award in Occupational Health & Safety at work. The employees receive training based on global best practices, establishing accountability for shop floor safety leadership and an evolving culture of continuous improvement for EMAL EHS performance.

EMAL is the world’s first organisation to deploy the NEBOSH Award program at the shop floor level, and holds the record for the single largest number of people sitting for the examinations. In its fourth year after launching in 2010, 77 EMAL employees are being trained this year to join the 100 EHS representatives that have already graduated from the EHS leaders on the shop floor program.

The NEBOSH Award is sponsored by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) which is the premier Health and Safety examining body. The awards are open to organisations of all sizes and industry from all over the world.
