Dubai Aluminium DUBAL the wholly state-owned corporation that operates a one million metric tonne per annum primary aluminium smelter, one of the world's largest single-site smelters and the largest using pre-bake anode technology is proud to announce that it is a lead sponsor of the World Energy Forum 2012 WEF 2012, which will take place at Dubai World Trade Centre from 22 to 24 October this year. The event, held under the patronage of H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and hosted by the government of Dubai, marks the first time that this high-level international energy conference will take place outside the headquarters of the United Nations.

Recognizing that access to sustainable energy is a paramount issue for all countries that are aspiring to economic and social development in order to improve the lives and destinies of their citizens, the United Nations has designated 2012 as the “International Year of Sustainable Energy for All”. Leaders from Member States of the United Nations, international organizations, and corporations attending WEF 2012 are thus expected to leverage the forum to work collectively towards cleaner, safer and more sustainable energy while striving for universal access to modern energy services. With this in mind, the forum’s sights have been set on charting progress towards a long-term sustainable energy solution with the capability to fuel global economic and social development, thus benefiting all people in every nation. New ideas on global energy issues from the perspectives of policy, technology and business are expected to emerge.

As a member of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy DSCE, DUBAL is an active proponent of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 DIES 2030, which has set a dynamic direction for Dubai to secure a sustainable supply of energy and enhance demand efficiency, while ensuring a balanced approach to protecting the environment. DIES 2030 is thus fully aligned with the UAE 2021 Vision, which lays the foundations for a green economy i.e. a maintaining a sustainable environment which also supports long-term economic growth.

DUBAL is a proudly UAE enterprise and works pro-actively to fulfil the ambitions of the country and the emirate of Dubai. Accordingly, we have whole-heartedly implemented the initiatives mandated by the DSCE in April 2011 – resulting in energy-savings of 11,402,076 kWh in the fifteen months to end-June 2012, which has simultaneously reduced CO2 emissions at DUBAL by 5,701 metric tonnes,” says Abdulla Kalban President & CEO. “Moreover, as an energy-intensive business, DUBAL is acutely aware of its responsibilities towards both energy demand abatement and the development of sustainable energy solutions. Our captive power station strives continually for optimal energy efficiency: thanks to its cogeneration and combined cycle configuration, approximately 36.8 per cent of the power generated at DUBAL is fuel-free; and in 2011 the thermal efficiency of our power plant was 43.4 per cent. On-going innovation in our reduction technologies targets, among other aspects, reduced energy consumption to 14.71 MWh/tonne aluminium in 2011, which is better than the norm for the aluminium industry. Our lead sponsorship of WEF 2012 reflects the depth of our commitment to finding sustainable energy solutions for our country, and the world.
