Egypt's ministry of electricity signed a $420 million contract with Orascom Construction (OC) to convert Assuit and West Damietta power plants to a combined cycle, raising capacity by around 50 percent with no additional fuel intake, the company announced on Monday.

The Assuit and West Damietta power plants have been fully operational at a capacity of 1,500 megawatts since the third quarter of 2015.

Orascom Construction contributed to the consortium building both plants.

OC invests in infrastructure projects, including a 2,000-3,000 MW coal fired power plant in Egypt.
